About the Speakers

Geoff Symon is a 20-year Federal Forensic Investigator and Polygraph Examiner.  His participation in high-profile cases includes the attacks on September 11, 2001, the War in Iraq, the Space Shuttle Columbia explosion, the 2002 bombings in Bali and the Chandra Levy investigation, among countless other cases. He has specified and certified training in the collection and preservation of evidence, blood-spatter analysis, autopsies and laboratory techniques.

Agent Symon has direct, first-hand experience investigating cases including murder (of all types), suicide, arson, kidnapping, bombings, sexual assault, child exploitation, theft and financial crimes, and is highly skilled in the psychophysiological detection of deception. He has taught undergraduate and graduate-level college courses in forensics at the George Washington University (DC) and Marymount University (MD).

Damon Suede grew up out-n-proud deep in the anus of right-wing America, and escaped as soon as it was legal. Though new to romance fiction, Damon has been writing for print, stage, and screen for two decades. He’s won some awards, but counts his blessings more often: his amazing friends, his demented family, his beautiful husband, his loyal fans, and his silly, stern, seductive Muse who keeps whispering in his ear, year after year. Love stories are universal. Love stories are powerful. And so are the women who write them. For three years, we follow the lives of five published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their businesses, find and lose loved ones, cope with a tsunami of change in publishing, and earn a living doing what they love—while empowering others to do the same. Romance is the behemoth of the publishing industry; it outsells mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy combined. Yet no filmmaker has ever taken an honest look at the amazing global community that romance writers and readers have built. Until now.

Oregon Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (OVLA) presents a workshop

I saw this in the latest Literary News from Willamette Writers, so I thought I’d pass it along to any locals who might be interested in going:

Oregon Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (OVLA) presents a workshop

Destruction, Mutilation, and Attribution:
Visual Arts and Federal Law
Professor Lydia Loren & Artist Jim Pallas

August 8, 2014
12:00-1:15

PNCA Bridge Lab
1241 NW Johnson St., Portland, OR 97209

In 1990 Congress passed the Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA) granting special federal rights to creators of works of visual art.  This session will explore those rights, describe a variety of federal lawsuits that have helped shape those rights, and hear from one artist about his experiences with using VARA to protect his work.

Professor Lydia Loren is the Robert E. Jones Professor of Advocacy and Ethics at Lewis & Clark Law School.  She has written extensively on a variety of intellectual property law topics.  Her textbooks “Copyright in a Global Information Economy” (3d. ed. co-authored) and “Intellectual Property: Cases and Materials (3d. ed. co-authored) are used in law schools throughout the country.
More info.:  https://law.lclark.edu/live/profiles/293-lydia-loren/

Artist Jim Pallas is a Detroit, Michigan native and recent transplant to Oregon.  His artworks are generally interactive, performing sculptures that depend on a combination of electronic logic and environmental stimulation to produce behaviors of movement, sound, light, or other phenomena. He began creating responsive, content-laden kinetic sculpture in the 1960’s.  His work has been selected for international awards and exhibitions in France, Austria, Canada, Mexico, and Japan.  More info.:  http://www.jpallas.com/

The event is open to the public. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch – some drinks will be provided. This event is free for PNCA students, alumni, and faculty and other students. OVLA suggests a donation of $10 for all others (collected at the door).

Questions: contact Andy Sfeir at  Andy.Sfeir@klarquist.com

1 MCLE credit pending through the Oregon State Bar.

OVLA’s Volunteer Legal Clinic also will be held on  August 8 at PNCA, before and after the workshop. Appointments with attorneys still are available – please see  http://oregonvla.org/clinic/ and contact OVLA to arrange an appointment before they are full.
