Marin was a cursed merman. Where he once walked the streets of Atlantis—where he found his true love—he now swam, alone. Until he was offered a way out: out of his curse and into the heart of another. But would he be able to love another as he did his true love?

Marley was a loner, a treasure hunter with wild theories about Atlantis who fantasized about mermen. He’d always felt a little out of place, always searching for something, and wanting nothing more than to belong to someone completely.

Between them lay several lifetimes and a wicked sorceress bent on possession. Is a soul deep connection enough to bring them together and to break a curse that was meant to never be broken?

*****

“Marin? Do you believe in fate? In reincarnation?”

“Reincarnation?”

“Past lives. The soul living beyond the death of one body into another.”

“Ah, yes. Transmigration. As it so happens, I do. Why do you ask?”

Marley sighed, flexing his fingers ever so slightly. Just enough to barely touch Marin’s. “I think I may have known you then. From before.”

“I think so too, Marley.” Marin held his breath momentarily before he continued. This was the time. This was it. “Aeëtes, his eyes—although everyone in his family had eyes of as dark as the night sky, my Aeëtes’s eyes were a striking blue. As blue as the Aegean Sea or a sky on a clear winter’s day. With one exception. His right eye was two colors. Partly the beautiful blue, but like a wave lapping the shore, the blue met with a golden brown.”

Marley’s breath caught as Marin described eyes that were identical to his own. Even down to how his parents’ eyes were of a drastically different color. No one could ever explain why there was such a difference; they just accepted it as part of who Marley was. “Like mine.” It was barely a whisper, but enough for Marin to hear.

“Yes, just like yours.”

Jazz Chaillet is your average college student: caffeinating his way through his tough chemistry program, working as many hours as he can at his bakery job to offset crushing student loans . . . and being hunted by a hellhound. According to the hellhound, Pyxis, tampering with dark magic has Jazz’s soul in a state of swift decay. The only problem? Jazz’s studying regimen doesn’t include witchcraft. In order to sniff out the real witch, Pyxis and Jazz will have to intimately connect to one another—in soul and body.

For a second he thought she was exaggerating, because she was prone to it—a shared quality that had made them fast best friends—but when he looked, there was actually a dog sitting onhis car.

On it. On top of it.

“What the fuck,” he breathed. He popped the top on the box of mixed bagels he was putting together, scrawled Nick/pickup and the date on the top, then shoved it in with the other boxes waiting for their weekly regulars. He pulled his gloves off with a sticky crackle, retied the strands of his kinky hair that were escaping from his tiny ponytail, and vaulted over the top of the counter, heading for the door.

“Wait!” Rosa hurried out from behind the espresso bar, narrowly avoiding tripping on their daily specials sign. Thank God it was the midmorning lag and there weren’t any customers to see them acting like a couple of goons. “Wait, don’t open the door! Are you nuts?” She grabbed the door handle before he could, keeping him from opening it. “He could bite your face off! Or worse, he could get in here and eat the stock.”

“I don’t think he’s interested in bagels,” Jazz said. He looked back outside.

It took a second for him to realize the dog, which had been watching the street with pricked ears like a normal animal, was staring right at him now, its eerie eyes locked on his through the glass door.

Fuck, maybe it wasn’t a dog. Jazz exhaled slowly as the… the thing blinked once, its fur ruffling in the wind. It was massive, way bigger than the K9s the local cops sometimes brought in with them, and its eyes were almost the same yellow as the bakery logo. Its coat was inky black, and its chest was wide and deep.

Hmm. Yeah, now that he was getting a good eyeful of it, it seemed more wolf than dog, but it couldn’t be wild… right? No wild animal would come this close to the city, and no wild animal would sit on a car.

Or, well. Jazz distinctly remembered a few Tumblr gifs of a grizzly bear sitting on top of a car.

“Shit,” he said under his breath. “What if it’s a wolf? That looks like a wolf, right?”

“Could be.” Rosa pressed closer to the glass, her dark eyes roving over the animal. “It’s looking at us.”

“No.” Jazz swallowed. “He’s looking at me.”

Ramón Santos is a musician who hasn’t written a decent song in years. He owes one more album on his contract and if he misses his date his career might as well be over. Luckily, he knows someone who can help, or rather something.

Zuhal is a magical being who sells inspiration, and has helped Ramón find his groove in the past, but there’s always a price to be paid. Ramón might just get the music he needs, if he can survive the encounter.

*****

When my savior showed up, he sported jeans nearly worn through at the knees and a beat-up leather jacket a few seasons past its prime. He was the very image of a rock ‘n’ roll cliché, and somehow, that was perfect. The calling card in my back pocket had grown steadily warmer since I’d dialed the number embossed on its surface in glossy black beneath his name, Zuhal, and the tagline, Inspiration for Hire. I shifted on the uncomfortable chair my manager had parked me in to sign some autographs after my latest gig, wishing I’d never agreed to the farce.

The room was disappointingly empty, with only a few dozen people standing in line to wait for my attention. A couple of years before there would have been hundreds of fans crammed into the tiny backstage area. Strike that—I never would have done a show at a venue this small when my songs had actually been on the charts.

I distracted myself from the depressing reality that had become my downward-spiraling career by searching out Zuhal again. My pulse raced when our gazes met. Eyes the color of a fine, aged bourbon appraised every inch of me and made goose bumps rise along my arms. I had to convince him to help me with my next album. Since the last time I’d seen him I hadn’t written a song worth a damn.

A redhead that might have been appealing on a different night stepped between us and murmured, “Your music changed my life Mr. Santos.” A flush painted her cheeks bright pink.

“Call me Ramón, please.” I smiled, signed the t-shirt she put in front of me, and tried my best to make a passable attempt at conversation.

When the adorable redhead moved aside, I looked toward him again. He stood closer now, a sly not-quite-smile teasing his lips. Had he made the people in front of him think of something more important to do, or was his trickery more harmful? I really couldn’t afford to lose any more fans.

I signed another t-shirt, another album liner, another random body part. All the while I could feel his stare warming my skin as he drew closer. When he finally stood across the table from me, I hesitated before looking up.

Zuhal was lean in a way I generally didn’t find attractive, too much sinew and bone showing through his sun-kissed skin. Still, something about him drew me in a way no one else could since I’d met him. I had no idea how old he really was, but he’d seemed to be in his early twenties for the decade I’d known him, with the beauty of unspoiled youth clinging to him and refusing to let go. I told myself he was too pretty, but that was a lie; he was exactly pretty enough, devastating even. His face balanced hard angles with soft curves to perfection. Now that he was so close, I could hardly catch my breath.

“Why have you summoned me?” The words were part of the ceremony and he always spoke them when he appeared to me, his voice low and full of dark promises.

The backstage room around us was deserted. Was that another of his tricks? I swallowed to get some saliva back in my mouth before speaking. “I need an album.” I left off the part where if I didn’t produce new music soon, I was most likely out of the business for good.

His perfect lips twitched into a frown that didn’t make him the slightest bit less attractive. “And what makes you think I would help you with such an endeavor?”

“It’s your job.”

He turned away in a whirl of heated air and stalked toward the door without a word, his dark hair streaming out behind him. Every step tightened my throat. The fear of never being able to write another song bore down on me.

“Please!” I shouted after him. “I need you.” My voice echoed in the empty room, amplifying my plea.

Zuhal stopped so quickly that if he had been merely a man he would have tripped. For a few heart-pounding seconds, he faced away from me without moving, and then he lifted his left hand to make a beckoning gesture without looking back.

When Ezekiel the Watcher Angel, requested a promotion he wasn’t expecting Steve, his boss and Higher Power to command him to bring back Azazel, Death’s assistant. Throw in the devil in a blue dress, a looming deadie apocalypse and a partner in an Archangel named Sam and Zeke might just earn his Guardian wings.

“Ezekiel?”

I looked up from my clipboard and froze. Standing in front of me, radiating divine power, was an older man with long white hair pulled back into a ponytail. He wore board shorts, a T-shirt, and flip-flops, and reading glasses hung from a chain draped around his neck. With a smile on his friendly face, he didn’t look like the higher power hundreds of religions called Heavenly Father, but more like a kindly hippie grandfather.

I pushed to my feet and promptly tripped over the length of my wings. In my most mortifying moment, God caught my arm and saved me from a face-plant onto the ugly industrial carpet. “Oh, God. Shit. Jesus.”

He chuckled and brushed me off. “Don’t worry. Not the first time I’ve heard My name. You should hear this place around Valentine’s Day.”

I blinked.

“As for Jesus? My Son works in accounting. You should introduce yourself sometime and bring them donuts. Nothing excites accounting like free sugar.”

“Yes, sir.”

He flinched at my words, and I closed my eyes, sending up a silent prayer. To where, I had no clue, as The Man was standing in front of me. At this rate he no doubt planned to bust my ass down to angelic lawn statue.

“Whoa there, partner. We’re pretty informal around here. Can I call you Zeke?”

I nodded. “Yes, sir.”

The Supreme Being smiled and patted me on the back, and I swallowed hard.

“I mean, yes, sir, God, sir.”

The man snorted. “Just call me Steve.” He gave me a once-over, and I wondered if my khakis and polo shirt were workplace appropriate. “Walk with me, Zeke. Oh, and unfurl the wings a little. You’re harshing my spiritual buzz.” Without another word he turned and took off down a hallway, the sounds of his flip-flops echoing.

I hurried to catch up, cursing my clumsiness.

“As you can see, there isn’t a formal dress code while in the office. Most of the staff favor business casual so they don’t have to change before golf in the afternoon. There’s a coffeemaker in the break room. Just don’t leave empty creamer containers in the fridge without replacing them. The last guy who did that lost his head. Literally.”

“Sorry?” I squeaked.

“Oh, don’t worry. We found it again, but the archs get cranky when they don’t get their caffeine. How many times do I have to tell them to leave the swords at home when they’re not out in the field?”

“Swords?”

“Yep, don’t mind them too much. They’re usually more bark than bite.”

As we walked down the hallway, I caught glimpses of beings seated at desks in cubicles. Some were speaking into headsets, some drinking coffee, and one was tossing pencils at the ceiling. It seemed just like every other office I’d ever seen on Earth. Except for the wings.

“This is the Heavenly side of the pod, by the way. Through that door over there is our counterpart. Some of the staff call them the baddies, but they’re not all bad. Except Cerebus keeps peeing on my rug. Damned dog.” He stopped in front of an office and gestured for me to enter.

“Thanks,” I mumbled as I opened the door. I stopped short with surprise, and Steve bumped into me.

Slumped on a chair in front of a large desk was a huge male of obvious celestial rank. His inky black wings fluttered, then folded, blending in with his leather jacket and black jeans. His dirty biker boots, which he’d propped on the desk, were encrusted with dirt and blood, and I swallowed down a wave of fear.

When he met my gaze, something I’d never felt before flooded my system: lust. Or disgust… possibly a mixture of the two.

“Holy….”

The man grinned at me, a flash of white teeth against his darkly handsome features. “Oh, this is going to be good.” He purred in a low growly voice. “Fresh meat.”
