Daily Prompt: Fight or Flight
When faced with confrontation, do you head for the hills or walk straight in? Was there ever a time you wished you’d had the opposite reaction?
Fight or flight? Totally depends on the situation. If the fight is something you feel strongly about then make your case. Make it passionate, put your heart and as a friend says, “put your fire into it.” But sometimes a fight isn’t always appropriate or helpful. Sometimes, you need to take a step back to get your head back in the game and then face the confrontation again, calm cool and collected.
Who doesn’t love a good discussion, friendly argument, sparring match, whatever you want to call it. I use humor to diffuse conflict when possible. I’ve found over the years when you make people laugh it can distract them from what made them so fired up in the first place. I’m not expecting everyone to ever agree with each other, and honestly that would make life boring if we all agreed on the same things all the time. At least make the effort to hear each side. Keep it funny, keep it light and keep it clean please unless we’re talking dirty but that’s a discussion for another time.
Now, as a writer? I love conflict. I love messing with my characters and writing strong and fiery and sometimes mouthy MC’s that fight the good fight. Who doesn’t love reading a story about a character who triumphs over adversity, saves the day and gets the girl or guy at the end? I mean, come on. And the supporting characters that keep the story going and add their snarky but still supportive insights are always enjoyable to write.
Fight or flight? Your call to make, but always keep it fun.
